February 16, 201016 yr I am about to finish my ea82t engine replacement and am looking for some fun stuff to do. I really would like to know if its possible to swap to awd in the gl-10 its an 86. I also have plans to swap in an intercooler and maybe a td04 should the car run well after I finish the replacement. anyway thanks ahead of time guys!
February 16, 201016 yr Hmm.... Do you not like the existing 4wd selectable? I prefer my diff. lockable 2/4wd to modern AWD systems, I buy tires a LOT less often. Are you making some kind of sleeper race beast or something?
February 17, 201016 yr Hey Im doing one now. I have a 87gl wagon hi/lo 5 speed and changing it over to a AWD 5 speed with 4:11 finals. With the set up it has right now, it has to much wheel pull. It does not handle well. This for my boy,he just started driving. So far so good.
February 17, 201016 yr Author I just want more fun from the car. my dad and I tear up some of the local dirt roads at least once a month and I want awd so I dont have to worry about frying the rear diff in 4wd. Basically I am trying to make this car as fun to drive as possible. I know about the ea82ts weak points (or have read enough post about that end in ej22 post) and honestly dont care because the car is my dd when I finish the motor replacement. I just want a little bit more. So how do I go about getting awd?
February 17, 201016 yr I'm doing a impreza AWD trans in mine, it also has a 2.2 in it , all disk brakes and getting a LSD rear diff. 15 in rims with 27's. I think it will handle great
February 17, 201016 yr If you find an RX tranny or an XT6 tranny. They both came in AWD with a center diff lock switch. The RX has a dual range option, but they are pretty rare. The XT6 was only offered single range as far as I know. But, you gotta match up your diffs or you'll fry your driveline. Those are the easy swaps. You could put an EJ tranny in but that would be best had with an EJ engine. Most EJ manuals have a viscous center diff. It requires the XT6 tranny crossmember to mount up without too many modifications. It would also require a custom driveshaft to be built and custom axles. Unless you did a 5 lug swap. That's my understanding of it all. Hopefully someone will chime in with more knowledge than me. Twitch
February 18, 201016 yr I've heard you can put all the internals from an EJ 5sp box into an EA 5sp box. Just open the two up and swap the parts over. So I've heard.
February 21, 201016 yr Well so far the swap is going easy. I got the middle section of a ej trans x-member and drilled out my stock ea, x-member and it fits perfect. Now for the fear section may be more difficult. The car has a SJR 4 inch lift on it already
