Kotul
Hey all, I'm new here but I just bought a 1.8L carbureted 87 subaru GL. When I bought it the guy was telling me how he never needed to change the oil, he'd just add more when he needed... he was explaining this to me as a feature... this should've been my first clue. When I got it, it was compltely gutless and wouldn't go over a certain RPM depending on how warmed up it was. Well, first thing I did when I got it was do all the usual tune up stuff (oil change, spark plugs/wires/cap/rotor, air filter, and engine flush). Now after I did that, it started acting even weirder, like it would start dying when I pushed on the accelerator, or it wouldn't really do anything. To get it to accelerate I would have to constantly tap on the accelerator. I finally brought it to my friends shop, and he checked it out and said that my carburetor was all clogged up. I then proceeded to take the carburetor out and bought the rebuild kit for it and rebuilt it. Now the problem is that I didn't take enough pictures of where all the vacuum lines and everything else went in, and it won't start. So does anyone here have some pictures of when they did this, and if it turns put that rebuilding the carburetor wasn't the end all fix all for the problems, does anyone have an idea of what it could be? eulogious
Almost seems like a timing issue... Did you check the timing before taking the carb apart? Anytime a car is "boggy" and doesn't like to go, I check the timing to make sure it's correct. Seems these ea82's tend to not like to be timed correctly. I can't really help you with your carb issue, as I have MPFI and a turbo, but there should be some info somewhere on how the carb goes together. Have you looked at the FSM for it? It should be available to download, and will probably have pic/diagrams for the carb in it. Search for FSM, and there should be some links to download the FSM. If you really can't find a link for it, I got one around here somewhere... but search first! Good luck man, and welcome to the forum!
2manetoys
87 GL. Is that with 2 headlights or 4? Perhaps an easier question: is it an EA81 motor or an EA82? And which Carb does it have? Hitachi or Carter Weber? On the inside of the hood should be a drawing of the vacuum lines. not totally complete, but the basics.
