weld spring perches?

Featured Replies

On my EA81 wheeler toy when I put EA82 suspension under the front of it I seemed to have lost a couple inches in ride height because I am running EA82 FWD springs to help get the best travel out of the front.A little bit helps out a lot.I am wondering if it is a good idea to move the spring perches up on the strut to help with the height drop. Obviously I can't just lay a BIG bead all around it in one go.I will make deep tack welds and work my way around while letting it cool off so I shouldn't have a problem.I know that moving the springs up will increase the preload. So at that point I wonder if it would be just better to run 4wd springs and get my height back at the expense of some some travel. Is there a way to calculate how much moving the perches will effect the preload?

I think he is talking about welding gas shocks. That's a little ****** I will agree. I saw someone else on here do it, but he was a very experienced welder, and he had the work and pics to prove it.

Not to bash on you, but I probably wouldn't be trying it if I were you...

I did it, took it slow and welded where the shock was welded together from factory and dowsed with water every time not to build up heat. It's not the safest thing to do. I would reccomend a clamp on the body of the shock to move the perch up, or a coil spacer of some sort. Good luck with the spring compressor. Where you want to weld is going to be thin i have a feeling.

would dowsing it with water make it brittle?

Is there a stock spring for a subi that is stiffer than a 2wd EA82 wagon front spring but softer than a 4wd EA81 wagon front spring?

Yes, however it will also make it harder. This is the method used to make swords a long time ago. Hard=brittle and less malluable. Vise-Versa. Being an experienced TIG welder. If it were say 304 stainless it wouldn't make a difference. Good Luck and don't blow your self up. :Flame::dead:

Man, you're crazy, that's some dangerous ************!

I think it would be best (and safest) to make an aluminum collar to sit on the spring perch, lifting the spring relative to the strut.
