Hello everybody, I have a ea82 In my mudd boat and was wanting to see if their is performance upgrades that I can do and was also wondering if I can find out the year model. Thanks.

on the heads should be the engine designatio EA82 - let us know if it's plain EA82, has a box around it, or what.

 

is it carb or FI?

 

does it have MPFI or SPFI?

The ea82 that is on the block has a square around, if that is what you mean? The engine has a low cylinder, still within 75 percent and rebuild is in sight got to make it through the hunting season first. I can take a picture what area would be best for you to see, like maybe a close up or something. The engine was carbed as far as I know. Would like to get some more horse power and a higher rpm at the top end. Dont want to loose to much low end if I can help it. Dont know if pump gas can stand any more compression, when I take this engine apart and get it bored to a clean over, I will need to know were I can get over size pistons and new bearings and gaskets and such and while its down I can shave the heads alittle and do some port and polishing maybe get a better cam I dont know. Any help would be appreciated I also have access to a turbo. I can't do this without help though. I know that these engines have been worked, probely by you or some others on this sight. THANKS.

not a whole lot you can really do to ramp up a ea82....most of these folks go to the ej series motor (ej18 ej22 etc) WARNING: if you turbo that thing youll need a new motor for suresies

What is a mudd boat?

Inboard with a rudder that has a cooling system that uses keels so that you don't require water from the bayou. I will drive right through soft mudd that has know water in it. Best use is to go through the marsh. The 1800 duel carb that the subaru brat had for a few years was suppost to have more horses than my overhead cam. I thought if the difference was compression or cam I could match on the rebuild. I herd ya about the turbo.

in general these engines are poor candidates for trying to beef up, they just don't really respond and are poorly designed from the start.

 

personally i'd do a decent rebuild....it might not need a rebuild, maybe it's just head gaskets or something? these motors don't typically, though i realize your use is totally non typical so who knows, need rebuilding. the blocks usually last as long as you care to properly maintain if they're not overheated or run out of oil.

 

folks have talked a lot about swapping different cams, deltacams can make cams for you and folks claim the turbo cams are a little different. it's such a dinky, underpowered, ill designed motor it's really best left untouched and to do what it's good at - rack up high miles really cheap. anything outside of that is asking a bit much.

 

how about an EJ18 or Ej22 engine instead? i can get those for cheaper than an EA82 rebuild would cost. cheaper, more reliable, way more power, easier to maintain, newer technologies and designs, way better motor...and did i mention cheaper? last one i bought was $150 and it was in great shape, low miles, and i've put 40k on it now.

 

RAM performance sell pistons, bearing kits, etc materials for Subaru engine rebuilds and EA parts - they can custom do some things too.

 

folks have carbed EJ engines if that's what you need to do.

Does the ej18 have a carbed version? Does it have a distributor? Will it have to be run by computer? For 150 dollars I would never rebuild my ea82. Were can I get a ej18? Is the ej18 alot heavier? Would the transmission bolt pattern be the same? That is alot of questions, I'll let you know in advance I appreciate the help. I'm sure the the ej18 is a horizonally opposed engine. Sorry I see that u said that people have carbed them so diregard the questions about carbs and computer.

i don't know where' you're located so whatever info i post my be totally irrelveant. i have no idea what des allmandes is.

 

EJ's are not carbed. folks have converted them, mostly aussie folks wanting to run propane. some countries had carbed EJ engines though, but not the US.

 

need an adapter plate to bolt an EJ up to an EA trans. folks make those and i think have even showed ways to make one yourself.
