sounds like a pretty good car, 200k, fwd, auto. but it ''needs trans work''. apparently it doesn't up shift until fully hot.

By low gears, he means 1-2-3? That's standard operating procedure. The transmission won't shift into 4th until the internal temp of the transmission is greater than 50F.

yeah, but i doubt that's the problem since we have seen 50F since april or march. but it could be he hasn't driven it in a while. i'll find out more info.

Could be old fluid too. Unless they're abused, the 4EAT isn't that bad of a transmission. My SVX 4EAT has 190k and its only issue is with the torque converter locking and unlocking.

Do your boy a favour and buy him a stick-shift. Problem solved. :D
