1998 subaru legacy outback PO483

Featured Replies

I got the PO483 check engine light today and I know what the code is. It only happens when there is a temperture drop of more than 15 degrees overnight because i live in new england. My coolant is fine, perfect color and perfect level and the cooling fans come on and my temp guage stays at the mid way point or one or two lines below that depending on how cold or hot it is out. Do you think I am just getting a false CEL because there has been such a drastic temperature difference the past couple nights in connecticut? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

The ECU looks for a certain drop in coolant temperature when fans come on, and if it doesn't see what it expects, it can set P0483. Since you're reporting that the fan operation itself seems correct, it's possible that the radiator has some blockage. Another possibility is that at some time a non-OEM thermostat was installed -- some aftermarket units are quite inferior to the original. It's also possible for the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) to be going bad. If any of these situations are marginal, the temp gauge can still remain close to its usual range.
