It has been a long time since i posted on this forum, i´m building an adventure subaru for a 5000 kilometer winter adventure rally,

( http://www.arctic4x4experience.com ) i passed the motor vehicle inspection today with a blank paper ( not bad for a 28 year old car ) Now the fun begins..

I have some questions,

 

* What tire size would you recomend as the biggest for a standard brumby, i don´t wanna eat up my clutch,, it´s a 1983 model with Fwd, 4wd,4wd low gearbox.. ?

 

* Any problem with running the whole rally in 4wd low,, lots of long distance transportation,,?

id probably run it in 4wd hi, you wont be able to get any speed otherwise.

 

you might want to consider a welded rear diff if you will be on snow the majority of the time.

 

bring a couple axles and boots with you and have fun!

A welded diff in the snow is a terrible idea. it sends the back of the car sideways and you end up fishtailing until you stop gaining speed.

 

I would recommend a 5 speed transmission swap but i do not know if that is possible at this point. Also get some larger tires. not sure what selection you have where your at.

 

You also might want to strengthen the underside of the car, or make skid plates, or something of the sort

 

You shouldn't hurt the tranny in low gear as long as you dont excede 35 mph/55kph. Those trannys have a thing for blowing up 3rd gear and reverse though, in their old age

 

Also, a brush/deer guard, offroad lights and high output alternator might be a good upgrade

 

For tire size, 215-75-R15 is a good tall, skinny tire for snow use and turn radius in the fender well, though some cutting and bashing is required

 

What are you going to do to keep the engine warm? I assume you will be in some freakin cold places, dont want the motor to freeze.

Is it going to on snow covered roads, or out in woods on lots of snow? If the latter I suggest a wider tire so you will float on top of the snow a bit better. Probably nothing taller than 27".I would also recommend a welded rear diff if its gonna be on deepish snow,if the terrain is uneven one tire will loose traction and dig itself to china while the other tire will have lots of traction.Then your stuck.

 

Even though its on snow in the winter you need to make sure your cooling system is up to the task.I suggest replacing the radiator,water pump,heater core,and all the rubber hoses.Including the tiny hoses on the intake manifold.

 

A 5 speed dual range transmission out of a latter subie would be alot more durable than the standard 4 speed.It might be worth upgrading to it.

 

Bring a couple of spare axles,and some tools to change them.ONE spare tire is MANDATORY,two might be even better

 

put a couple of offroad lights on it,and a higher amp alternator.Depending on availability a 80-100 amp alt from a 80's GM vehicle is a pretty easy upgrade.

Not sure what to expect about the terrain, first time this type of event is held in Sweden, I have installed new wheel bearings in front, the car already has an engine preheater for the nights, installing double optima gel batteries, it will have a new clutch ( ordered ), ofcourse tons of lights..

 

The big Q is what tire size i can run,, i like to be on the safe side as for clutch and gearbox stress,, and still go up a few sizes for clearance and traction in snow.

 

The original gearbox and EA 81 stays in the car.. i´m sure it will be fine as long as my tires aren´t to big..

you can fit the 235/75-r15s without lift if you cut out the fenders and hammer in the wheel wheels. It shouldn't hurt the tranny if you use low range up to 35 mph with that tire size
