Any way to ID a full time dual range tranny easily?

Featured Replies

Im heading back to a junkyard locally here tomorrow i think to check this GL out again. Ive been thinking about since i first saw it a few weeks ago. It says Full Time AWD Turbo on the rear door of the wagon. Is there any way i can confirm the thing is actually what the door says before shelling out $150 for it (the guy i talked to said it ran good, he drove it around the yard into the spot its in now)

The only reason I ask is because it SAYS that on the door BUT it has an EA82 under the hood... No turbo in sight for that thing. I assume the turbo engine popped and they swapped in the EA82 thats easier to find. Now, the easy solution would be to keep the tranny the same i would assume and just toss in the EA82 right?

Either way, is there an easy way to id the tranny? If it is a FT AWD dual range im gonna snag it i think...

is the car your talking about an ea81 or ea82 car? what year?

If its an EA81 id be intrested in everything to do my 4wd to FWD swap...except the tranny if you want it.

Whoops, i always forget some details. I have no idea of the year but its an EA82 style wagon. Has the "Full Time AWD Turbo" or something like that on the door if that helps determine year. Ill snag pics tomorrow if i can. All i remember is that it lacked an LSD rear, dont remember ratio though. I dont kow what the heck the previous owner swapped and what they kept. Ill update tomorrow with more info to see if i should get some cash for this tranny.

Some ancillary questions about the trnny too:

- Will it hold up to an EJ in front of it?

- What ratio is a dual range FT manual tranny?

Id be thrilled if someone could assist me here =]

The little red circle shows the shaft which operates the locking centre diff. The Push Button 4WD gearbox's have this shaft on the same side but in a slightly different spot.

Unless you saw inside the car4, it is probably a 4eat automatic.

if it is a 5spd d/r, your clue would be a 3.700 rear diff. This car would have rear disc brakes, and a dual row radiator at least. It would also have a 60 amp alt.

I DID actually get inside and check it out, yea (took its heater buttons, mine were worn to unreadable). I even played the shifter and it was nice and tight (same with the 4wd shifting). The ONLY dilemma is that the engine was a N/A EA82 and not a turbo... Now, this could mean the original engine was swapped, could mean they converted it to non turbo but kept the original everything else, could mean they swapped the whole kit and kaboodle (engine/tranny/rear) from a donor car for simplicity sake.

I DO remember it having the 3.7 in it though (i think... I mainly just checked to see if it was an LSD unit. no, it wasnt). So the rear is 3.7 but it does come with the issue that the idiots doing the swap may have just swapped in a N/A engine and tranny meaning the tranny could be a normal DR with the 3.9 gearing inside... All in all, the shady naturally aspirated engine makes me question what the hell else funky is going on with that thing.

Even if it IS a normal D/R tranny, $150 is a great price isnt it? I have the pushbutton in mine, so id love a D/R. Could i count the splines on the outputs for the front axles to find its gear ratio? I may just go get it irregardless.
