clacking almost gone; still there

Featured Replies

after finding out that i had left out the relief valves in the cam carriers, i got them installed and that fixed my clacking problem, but there is still one. (on the easy side to work on thank god) i have drivin the car about 150 miles now since the rebuild, and about 35 to 40 miles since i got the relief valves in. all the lifters have shut up except this on the passenger side of the motor. it is a quiet, soft tap, but i was wondering if it will go away, or if one of the lifters on that side has failed and wont pump up or whatever.

btw, all lifters mizpah rebuilt.

It might or might not... frankly, I think the best source of information might be to contact mizpah and ask their opinion.

Glad to hear that you tracked down the issue. Did you ensure that the relief springs were still serviceable, or perhaps replaced them?

replacing them might not be a bad idea. if the clicking doenst go away, i'll try that before i get drastic and start replacing expensive parts that are probably ok.

in relation to the relief valve spring/oil supply which HLA is it? is it on an end or one in the middle? did you try to compress any while you were in there replacing that spring? running it a bit more won't hurt.

calling mizpah does sound like the best place to start.

left the relief springs out, wow! what did it do? was it drivable like that?

crazier then that. i didnt leave the relief "spring" out, i left out the relief "valve." that hallow cylinder thing that goes in the cam carrier. im just surprised that i didnt ruin the engine.

im afraid (for some reason) to call mizpah, cause i hate calling back on work i had done, but i might have to. if worst comes to worst, i'll just replace all the lifters on the side thats clacking.

oh, and it appears that the clicking is coming from the passenger side of the engine, and it very distinctly sounds like the forward most lifter.

they're experience might inform you here, that's why i'd call.

that's the closest HLA to the relief valve spring, i expected the opposite.

personally the HLA's from mizpah are so cheap i think i would only have two solutions here personally. one would just be to leave it for awhile and ignore it which is probably what i'd do but i'm so strapped for time i just wouldn't want to take the carrier off again.

the other would be to go in and replace them all again on that side. the labor involved wouldn't be worth my time to try and guess which ones are bad or if any of the others are compromised and might cause issue later.

I think that as long as you are open and honest and not trying to blame THEM (which 90+% of customer service calls sound like) they will be happy to help, if for no other reason than relief that you are not complaining. They might even get a good chuckle out of it. They will know, or at least know that they can't foretell the future and will tell you so. (I did about 10 years of phone support, and really enjoyed dealing with someone who wasn't trying to "tear me a new one".)

Otherwise, follow the sound advice from GG.
