Removing the dash

Featured Replies

I am in the process of removing my dash (91 Loyale). I decided to do this because the guy I bought the car from was a smoker and it also smells like a rat died in the air ventilation system. Aside from all this, I am trying to fix all of his home wiring issues. So I figured I would remove it, clean it, and rewire it. I have the dash almost all the way off, but I cannot get it over the steering wheel. Do I have to remove the steering wheel too?

Yeah, it's best to remove it to get enough room to pull the dash out. The three dashboards I have pulled I ended up pulling the steering wheel out to have enough room to pull that dash out.

You might want to pull the heater core and have it looked at while you're in there.

Ok. What is the best way to get it off? I haven't really looked at it yet. Also, I really don't even know what the heater core is or where to find it. How do I check it?

Leave the steering wheel on. Just lower the column. The steering wheels are on tight and you will need a puller. If you do decide to pull the steering wheel, make a reference mark on the shaft so you can return it to the exact position.

I tried lowering it and didn't have any luck, but I will try it again. Removing the dash is a PITA so by the time I got to this point I was already frustrated and decided to call it a day.

Yeah, don't rush it. It is a PITA. But, the column should not be too difficult to lower. Held up in place with two 12mm nuts accessed from underneath. A six inch extension on your ratchet will help. Once you get the dash out, put the column back up and secure it in place with the nuts. Otherwise, well its just easier that way.

Ok, sweet. I didn't realize you could lower it like that. I thought you were just talking about the little handle you can use to raise and lower it while sitting in the seat. I will def. do that tomorrow.:)
