May 20, 201114 yr My 88 (by VIN) GL will crank but not start. It has a rebulit EA-81 engine, and rebuilt carb. It has new plugs, wires, and ignition coil. The distributor was going out (engine running rough) so I replaced it thinking that was the problem. It was running the day before then the next morning it would not start. The distributor is a nimpedeso and is a reman. I timed it using the fly wheel and lining up TDC on piston 1 with position 1 in the distributor cap. I thought it would at least try to start or sputter but it did nothing. I need help. I look forward to the replies and suggestions.
May 20, 201114 yr Welcome to the forum. Cool name! Can I just ask you to clarify something? Have you managed to get it to run at all with the new distributor? If the engine has been rebuilt, it is possible that it does not have the origional flywheel on it. Therefore the timing marks could be wrong. Maybe pull N.o.1 plug out and establish TDC for sure. Is it points or electronic? Very rude question.... Did you remember to install the rotor? One more thing. it is also possible that you are 360 degrees out. Again you need to establish TDC on the N.o1 cylinder on its FIRING stroke. (valves shut)
May 20, 201114 yr Author I did remember to put the rotor it and it is electronic not points. I have not gotten it to start with the new distributor in. The flywheel is the original and worked fine when we put the engine in 7 months ago. How do I know if it is TDC on the firing stroke? I did pull the NO. 1 plug out and check for TDC when I timed it. But I did not check to make sure if it was on the firing stroke. I don't know how to check for that. Thanks for replying.
May 21, 201114 yr for finding compression on the #1, pull the plug and cover the hole with your finger, when you feel it building pressure that is your compression stroke, bring the piston all the way up and you're there. Have a friend crank the engine and check for spark just to be sure you are getting a spark.
May 21, 201114 yr How are your wires connected?the black wire is positive! the yellow wire is negative. Good luck
