'97 Impreza OBS - Gas tank interchange

Featured Replies

Just wondering which gas tanks I can use in my 97 OBS. I filled it up today for the first time and lost like $20 in a couple miles.... :(

Don't mean to bump so soon but I need to get this fixed asap.

Just out of curiosity: how much fuel was really spilled, according to the gas gauge (i.e. the gauge went all the way up and after a few miles indicated just half a tank)? Are you sure the fuel made it to the tank in the first place :) ?

If the leak is somewhere low in the tank you can probably patch it, but to know which other cars have a similar tank you can look for the part number currently in your car (subarupartsforyou will help). They say there was a change in '97, so you may want to call them with your VIN to see which one is the right for your car.

Its pretty much stopped leaking at 3/4. Just a little bit when I drive it. At first it was like Niagara falls all over the place. Tank was covered all around. Not Just at the filler.

Probably rotted around the nipple for the filler neck hose hooks onto the tank.

You have to drop the exhaust, driveshaft, diff, and rear crossmember to get the tank out. Maybe just fill it to a half tank?

You can take a look at it through the access covers under the rear floor. If the sender is leaking, you can replace that without dropping the tank. If the tank is leaking, there's a permatex tank patch kit that has fiberglass and epoxy resin it it that you can coat the area with. It's a pain to get in there though.

If you drop the tank, you will need to replace every pipe, hose, and clamp under there, and there's a bunch of them. If the rest of the car is in good shape, it's worth it. But if the quarters and rockers are rusted through, it might be time to take it off the road.

if you are still driving it, leave the gas cap loose. it will reduce the pressure in the tank and decrease the ''forcing'' of the gas out of the leak.

are you sure it is the tank that is leaking and not the filler neck?

did you look at http://www.car-part.com ?
