Front washer pump

Featured Replies

On my dads 91 legacy the front windshield washer pump has 2 wires hanging out of it. 1 is blue with a white stripe, and the other is blue with a red stripe. Where do these hook up? I tried looking in the haynes manual at the wiring diagram, but just got confused. Thanks guys.

This might seem obvious but one wire will eventually make its way to ground (negative terminal) through the depressed washer switch on the steering column and the other will get 12 volts from a fuse block (FB-x). I don't have a wiring diagram of the '91 otherwise I could be more specific.

ok, this is a VERY simplified diagram derived from my 1990 FSM - wire colors can vary obviously.

If you have the plug shown in the diagram (located at the pump itself) then you should be able to figure out what goes where.

as was already noted - the pump recieves full ground thru the switch, completeing the circuit

Hope this helps. :)

So one needs to go to the switch to be grounded then the other goes to fuse 2 20 amp. I'm sorry, you gotta forgive me. I don't know anything about wiring. I could barly wire up my sterio. So I'm gonna be kinda slow.

assuming that fuse 2 is the correct fuse for the washer pump, then yes, that would be correct.

the wire from the switch is the "ground" wire - circuit is normally "open" and completed when the switch is depressed (similar to how the horn works)
