I have an 86 Subaru GL. The the muffler rusted out and broke so naturally I ripped it off.

 

first thought was a Glasspack I found for 20 bucks but it seemed weird to put a glasspack at the end of the line.

 

I have a slightly trashed exhaust system off a fellow ea82 I found beat up,smashed up,shot up then burnt out in the woods. I originally pulled it for the catts but im always broke and I figured I could use a section to straight pipe it out past the bumper instead of the fumes accumulating under my car furthering corrosion and sounding ************ty.

 

Anyway I cut the catt off of it and found a double walled pipe 1 3/4 an 2"

I also noticed my 86 has 1 catt at the y pipe. the chopped system has the catt and a "resonator"(I think thats what its called).

 

I got the piece to fit up o.k but the smaller diameter pipe is stuck inside the 2" pipe from a slight bend. I defiantly dont want to run it like thatpipe.jpg

Im glad I dont know these people personally

 

I couldnt tell what year it was or if its injected or carbed,

anyways why would they change up the exhaust like that?

I ended up knocking the 1 3/4" pipe out about an inch or so

I was able to slide the 1 3/4" into the pipe,then the 2" pipe fit over the pipe on the car, nice fit.I spent a whopping $3 on an exhaust clamp and there ya go. My car sounds so much better then it did! its actually surprising how much quieter it is considering its a straight through pipe.

I hope there no ill effects with the 1 3/4" but Im honestly satisfied for what I spent

hi, all of the original ea82 exhaust , including the y-pipe, and all the way back is double piped , the original ones that is. all replacements i have seen , even dealer pieces ( which are made by someone else here in the states now ) were single pipe.

I'm guessing you are running stock carbed? That size is probably good if it's straight pipe from the cat to the bumper. It's when you add a weber or convert to SPFI that 2" is a better size flow wise.

I ran 2 1/4" straight pipe from the cat on, it was obnoxiously loud outside of the car and the drone was bearable inside the car at cruising speeds. I finally added a turbo muffler which quieted down the drone while keeping good exhaust flow. I lost some low end torque with the 2 1/4" pipe but gained some power over 3500 rpm which was great for flying down the freeway at 70+. If I were to do it again, I would go 2" which would put the peek power closer to the rpm range I normally drive in. :)
