86 hatchback, fuel pump?

Featured Replies

86 4x ea81 hatchback. where is it? is it in the tank? i have changed the rear fuel filter, but thats as far as i have gone into the fuel system. how can i get at it, do i have to drop the tank. thanks alot

dont ea82 carb models have em on the firewall, or under the rear seats? can i use one of those? for a stock ap?

i've heard alot of confusing info about this.

thanks in advance

Its on a tray in front of the rear torsion bar/rear axle depending on 2/4wd. Triangular shaped tray with 3 bolts securing it, right next to the rear fuel filter you just found.

Don't forget the front "Vapor canister" filter, which is just another fuel filter. That too could be the problem.

You might want to drain a little gas out of your fuel tank and see how much crud comes out. Over the years a lot of sediment can build up and if the tank has internally rusted at all you will get rust flakes clogging up your filter and lines too.

Drain plug is a 10mm headed bolt. Use care not to snap it off or you are in for a yucky situation.

I just changed a fuel pump that is off a similar car and one thing that is good to do is use a "c" clamp on the gas line from the tank so that you don't have gas pouring all over your hands while you work. We tried vice grips first but I don't suggest that method. I agree with Shawn though, first check your filters. Filters are more often the problem than the pumps. Good luck!

actualy... i was realy asking for my mpfi swap, i just went out and put my high pressure fuel pump on that little shelf, and ran high pressure line where the rubber was. now im gettin good solid pressure with no air. that clamp idea, would have been great, since the pressure of 10 gallons of fuel, pushes it out reel fast.

thanks
