Swapping Gen 1 Brat Ignition Module with Gen 2

Featured Replies

So I haven't had spark for quite awhile now and I have been slowly narrowing the problem down and I think we have traced in back to the ignition module (I have electronic ignition - CA version I believe). The cheapest replacement I can find goes for $260. I see the Gen 2 ignition module going for about $90. I can't see how they could be that different, but I can't find specs on either to compare voltage, ohms, etc.

Does anyone know if I can swap these? Will I need to swap out the distributor?

The pickup even looks the same for the Gen 2 model.

You can use the later electronic distributor and ditch your external ignition components - just get a matching distributor and coil from an 82+ EA81 and drop them in.

It looks like my distributor has already been changed to the electronic type. There are no points and condenser, just a rotor and pickup.

Basically, I have no spark. I have replaced the pickup in the distributor, all new plugs, and replaced the coil. We are getting no spark from the coil to the distributor. We have power coming from the ignition, but no power going to the distributor. As far as I can tell the power must pass through the Ignition Module (mounted on the passenger side of the firewall under the hood) and then it goes to the distributor. Unfortunately no one (that i talked to) knows how to test the ignition module to confirm that this is the problem.
