'90 Legacy 5spd tranny into a '95

Featured Replies

Sorry if this is on the wrong thread or if this has been asked before. I did a search and came up with nothing I saw relating to this.

I recently bought a 95 legacy wagon 5spd AWD knowing the transmission was on its last leg and would need a replacement.

So far the cheapest I have located is one out of a 1990 legacy. I know not every part will bolt up properly on the transmission. I am curious as to what extra parts I will need outside of the general swap from a 3.900 to a 4.111 (the guy has all those parts available and is selling them with the transmission). It's being sold for all parts and transmission at 350. Which is a damn sight cheaper than what I could find anywhere else.

I know from reading on the forum that from 93 back, at least the starter will bolt up different? Is there any other issues you guys could clarify for me so I know what I am getting into before I go and buy this transmission. Or if it's even worth it. Or if possible a cheaper or easier solution if you know a good place in the Northwest to pick up transmissions. I can drive to anywhere in the state as long as they have what I need.

Thank you for reading!

Tried car-part.com?

Dunno specifics for Awd, but I got a Fwd out of a 91 and put in a 95 no problem. Had to swap the speed sensor and the bracket for the mount but they appeared identical otherwise.

ratio info: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=32148

when swapping a 5 speed in the 90s , there are two concerns, final drive ratio and push vs. pull clutch.

the final drive ratio is easily over come by swapping in the matching rear diff. the push vs. pull clutch is not so easy. (this is not a cable vs. hydraulic issue.)

but generally speaking if the 90 5speed has a 4.11 final drive ratio (95 5speed has a 3.9 final drive ratio, 100% sure) just get the rear diff too, you should be able to bolt it in and go, no worries.

EDIT:

you can use any 5 speed trans from 95 - 98 leagcy 2.2L car, (not Outback, LSi or GT.)

you can use any 5 speed trans from 95 - 98 IMPREZA 2.2L car or 1.8L car.

search www.car-part.com you will have to search each year and model separately but you will have lots to pick from. put in your zip code and sort by distance. shipping will likely cost you $150.
