My ,1998 Legacy Brighton AWD 2.2L,check engine light keeps coming on and the same code P302 keeps re-appearing. After the engine is warmed and hot, I can hear some "popping" type noise from the exhaust as I stand behind it. Runs good and fuel mileage is still near 30 mpg. Plugs and wires time? Any other things to check out and start replacing? 230K miles and still going strong. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would suggest starting with plugs and wires. When you pull the plugs, take a look at the plugs to see how the engine has been running, as well as if there is any excessive wear on the electrode.

 

Excessive wear on the electrode could cause a larger gap, which may be causing the misfires.
