1987 GL wagon Transmission

Featured Replies

Hey all, first time poster, long time reader.

My 87 GL wagon's Automatic Transmission was going along fine, than after a full stop at a stop sign it wouldn't get past 1st gear nor would it go in reverse. While in reverse or neutral the engine behaves like it is in neutral. in D, 2, or 3 it behaves like normal except it never leaves 1st gear.

So should i try this cleaning of the band? described in the thread below? My manual says that anything but changing the fluid on the transmission is beyond my means.

I've gotten some information from another older thread (link below). I am trying to figure out where/what the torque converter is, so i can try the "replace the ATF and add a cleaner" method. Or i could try to open the actuatar housing and clean the band there or inspect it maybe. but again my manual doesn't give much info on the tranmission repair jobs as it is a manual written for the home mechanic. (which i am) Any additional insight would be helpful.

I am in Southern Vermont. The car is from oregon so it's body is in good shape/worth saving. A used tranny is gonna run me $550 shipped from a junkyard. seems a little high to me? anyone have one for a more reasonable price? (87 GL AT 4DR 4X4 W/O TURBO)

Thanks in advance!
