New member from Denver

Greetings from the rocky mountains. I purchased my most recent Subie last weekend. It's a white 1985 GL 2dr wagon with a 4MT and 2 speed TC. The dash has massive sun damage, driver's seat is in bad shape and she has at the usual spots of the fenders but the floors and frame still look solid and the rest of the interior is near perfect. While she's not a total creampuff everything is there, original except for the rear speakers (the P.O. did a hack job of replacing them) and 100% functional.

 

On the short list I will be replacing one CV this week and getting the Y pipe welded to fix a leak. The valve covers are leaking of course so I have a new set of those on the way as well. On the medium term I am still trying to figure out whether to get the fenders repaired or do something more creative, then sand and paint. Longer term who knows.

 

Me, I grew up in Subaru's and continued to own a variety of them over the years and am happy to be resting my butt in one again. I am a CAD Manager by trade and my father and I have a buisness supercharging aircraft as well. Yes, I have already started checking some of our parts for fitment on the new GL. You know . . . just to overcome the loss of power due to altitude here in Denver . . . that's all.

 

Anyway, glad to be here. I look forward to digging through the archives and getting to know some of you.

Thanks Shawn. I'll try to make time to stop by next time I am up that direction. I'm down near Dry Creek and University but we make it up that way fairly often. There's a good chance I'll be picking your brain fairly often.

I will get some picks posted up soon. She's covered with greasy hand prints right now from swaping out a CV last night and wants a bath before the camera shows up.

 

To recipricate the invite to your shop Shawn, you are welcome to stop by our shop sometime as well. It's not subie stuff but it is still gearhead goodness. We're down at Centennial Airport. Anybody is welcome really. Just call or PM in advance to make sure we are not out on the ramp, picking up parts or something.

I might pick your brain about a supercharger for my impreza.

I bought a mitsubishi 13G turbo I was going to install custom on my ea81 engine in my '86 Bat, I'm just installing 5-speed transmission swap now.

 

I'd be interested to know any info about your ea81 aircraft supercharger products from your company, I'd easily go that way if you had some proven already-engineered boost products already invented.

 

I owned some VW Corrado G60 cars previously, I had thought about using the VW G-lader supercharger in a custom ea81 install. G-lader is cool, but nowhere near the maintenance-free reliability of the ea81 engine itself. 13G turbo with oil and coolant lines run will be MUCH MUCH more reliable than a G-lader.

 

How do you handle fuel delivery for airplanes? boosted carb of custom fuel injection like megasquirt?

At F.A.T. we have concentrated 99% of our efforts on the certified aircraft market. As a result we only have bolt up parts for Continental and Lycoming engines. In fact we just completed an installation on a Cessna 182 for a gentleman based out of SLC. We don't have anything for the EA81 . . . yet. My hatch will be the development platform for that one. We don't use the scroll type superchargers you are familiar with or twin screw for our applications. There is a company called RAM Engines that specializes in Subaru engines for experimental aircraft, boats and cars including supercharged applications. If you are looking for bolt-on parts in the immediate future they will be your best bet. I have two development projects in the works already that need to be completed so my timeline for supercharging the subie is longer than any of us would like.

 

We use a number of centrifugal superchargers, primarily for weight and flexibility of mounting locations. We have certified products for both carburated blow-thru and fuel injected aircraft engines. We have made some slight adjustments to the existing fuel systems on those aircraft but the way engines are managed and boost is applied to general aviation aircraft simplifies those changes compared to the relative complexity of automotive engines. Some of the theory behind boosting aircraft engines lends itself very well to automotive applications in the form of solid power with terrific reliability but most people rarely consider it or apply it.

In Aurora you have Speedyrupair. I have had 100% luck with them on newer generation subarus in years past.

 

There used to be a subaru specialist near Emerald Isle in Aurora but I am not sure if they are still around. Haven't been there in almost 2 decades.

 

Retroroo is up near the merchandise mart and a big supporter of this site.

 

AWD Pirates have regular meets in the metro area. It was started by a bunch of locals that left NASIOC. Not sure how active NASIOC is in Denver anymore.

Denver doesnt participate in NASIOC pretty much at all anymore, I went up in a cruise with some AWDpirates one day, from 6&colfax to Idaho springs, to mount Evans and through evergreen! And my subi kept up (86 gl10 Turbo). ShawnW, clarksons (up in conifer) are good shops, the parts department at GOsubaru WEST can find a lot of hard to find brand new parts for ea82's

Figured I would necro this thread instead of start a new one.  I'm back.  After being transferred to Florida I sold my 85 hatch.  I moved back to Denver a couple months ago and just picked up an 86 hatch yesterday.  Time to start watching the yards again and replacing/upgrading parts as I find them.  First up are seats and wind shield.  Need to source a DR5MT eventually as well.  Anyway, its good to be back.
