So, here's the deal.

 

I had a 1978 Mercury Monarch I wanted to get rid of. Who else, than a guy who likes to supe up, hot rod, and race cars? (mind you he's 17)

 

he's got a VW Sprint with a turbo and intercooler, that when he gets ready to sell it, he'll take them off and give them to me. I sure hope I can get them to work if I switch to an EA81 or EA82 MPFI.

 

A good switch for a 5.0L engine with problems, at least I think...

Are you talkin about a Chevy Sprint there john? 3 cylinder turbo.. like 65 HP You'd need EFI to run the turbo; turbos don't work with most carbs (Yes, you can get them to work as a draw-through (Carb -> Turbo -> engine) but having air/fuel mixture drawn through a hot turbo isn't exactly what I'd want to do :-P Blow through (Turbo -> carb -> engine) only works if you have the right kind of carburetor.

What you need to do, is find an EA81 Turbo Coupe with body damage or something. Strip the engine and crap out of it, as well as the entire wiring harness. Swap this with teh one in your hatch, drop the engine in with your 5 speed, and you have an EA81 Turbo Hatch, that nobody knows is a turbo until you go blasting by them, turbo screaming :-)

Wouldn't be that hard, you're good with electrical stuff, I'm good with electrical stuff, we're both good with mechanical stuff, and Russ is good at being the b*tch :-P

By next summer, I should be tooling around in an EA81T powered, CIS fuel injected, 2wd, 5spd, 1980 Hatchback!! Talk about a sleeper! Now I just gotta find an intercooler.

Isn't the Sprint engine a 1.0L, and won't the turbo be sized accordingly? I ask this because I've thought of doing similar stuff, but I figured the Sprint turbo (or intercooler) would be too small to do as much as I'd want.

Chevy Sprint w/ Suzuki 1.0 litre turbo engine had 70 horsepower, and 107 foot-pounds of torque. Not to bad for a 3 cyl.

I wouldn't mind an EA81T engine, because I know more about how an EA81 works than an EA82... and oh...

 

I could put this turbo in line after the subaru turbo from the EA81T... good idea? bigger, smaller, isn't that a twin turbo setup?

A twin turbo set up will go from a smaller turbo into a larger one. The smaller one is there to help spool the larger one. Of course it is not that simple. I cannot tell you specifically but I know there is more to it than just plumbing one into the first. Boz

I run a front mount intercooler on my EA82T. I have a Mazda Fmailia BMFR intercooler mounted in front on the radiator, and the have direct piping running over the front (over the radiator) into it. All you need to do is cut away a bit of the underneath of the bonnet, and make a small buldge, and hey presto, you have veyr low intake temp, and more HP, all cost me $NZD50, so that would be about $USD20-25. I also have a vent in my bonnet, above where the throttle body is, which live an EVO, it faces back to draw the hot air out. Again, that has made a huge difference to the airflow, and operating temperature of the car.
