i just purchased a new 04 outback, and i'm closing in on 1000 miles. i plan on doing an oil change at that time.

 

What brand of dino oil do folks recommend ?

 

also, if I change the oil/filter myself (or any other maintainance items), does that effect my warrenty in any way?

why would you change your oil at 1000miles?

 

 

that's total overkill... break the engine in

and change it at 3k as recommended

 

search on oil brands. many prefer different brands for diff reasons.

i use a synth blend... seems to work nicely.

 

save receipts from any self warranty work...

There have been some people that say dino is better for new engines. I don't remember the reasoning behind it though. Something to do with conditioning seals?

 

Anyway, the two dino brands I like are Castrol GTX and Mobil.

Did you buy this new or used? If you bought it new it should have come with information regaurding the extended engine warrenty that you get if you stick to the recommended service intervals and use Castrol. 100k miles for Castrol GTX, 200K miles for Castrol Synthetic Blend, and 300K miles for Castrol Syntec. Castrol Makes good oil, and as long as you save receipts and document mileages you get extra warrenty on the engine. I've been using nothing but Castrol for years, even before Subaru was. (They used to have the same warrenty deal with Quaker State) Never had any trouble.

 

Oh, as for the greif about changing it at 1000 vs. 3000, do what you like. You can talk to a dozen different automotive professionals and get a dozen diffrent reason for and against it.(Because that's what I did) I had my STi's oil changed at 1000 and then 4000. At 4000 I even had the Syntec put it and my car doesn't seem to use a bit of oil.
