I have a '98 legacy outback, recently my fuel gauge stopped working. I opened the access panels to see if it was obvious which side needed to be replaced. The passenger side was fine but the driver side wires were a mass of corrosion, just one touch and the yellow and black wire crumbled into nothing. Now the car wont start at all and it is a very long walk to the wreckers for a replacement sender.

 

Is the sender really why the car wont start or is it just a bizarre coincidence?

 

If this is the issue is there a recommended hack to get the car moving again so I can at least drive to get he new part?

Not sure if you got this resolved, but it's possible the wiring to the fuel pump is also bad, which is why the car won't start. I'd recommend replacing the entire fuel pump assembly if the corrosion is that bad.

Sadly I've had to put it out to pasture.. even if I got it working again it was only going to be around for a short time there were other near terminal issues. I was offered an '09 at a good price so I changed.
