February 21, 201313 yr The US spec year 2000 Outback four cylinder 2.5 engines (3 of them) that I have seen have steel ones with sharp edges. Not sure what engine you have.
February 26, 201313 yr I thought all the SOHC engines had steel cam pulleys. If anything, just remove the three bolts holding one of your cam pulley covers on, pull the cover and find out for sure.
February 27, 201313 yr Author I did verify it does have metal. Just for info, there are lots of sohc 2.5 engines with plastic cam pulleys, I have seen It on foresters and impresa's.

Does a 2000 Legacy have plastic cam sprocket(s)? no special tools needed but those cam bolts are annoying particularly if you haven't done them before probably. the cams have a flat spot on them for holding with a wrench and since you're doing a headgasket job it's no extra work to pull the valve cover and hold the cams in place. use EJ25 Turbo headgaskets for that motor.
