I have had an interesting problem with my 79 GL wagon and I am not sure what caused the issue. I recently had my fuel pump go out on me. The pump would work great when it was cool; however when it would operate for a period of 5 to 7 minutes it would heat up and then stop and the car would quit. I have replaced the pump and all is good. This pump was less than 6 months old.

 

When starting this car after sitting for a period of greater than 1 day, it takes time for the engine to get fuel and then run. I have to crank it for 5 to 10 seconds until the fuel pump gets enough fuel into the carb.

 

1. Would this be considered normal?

2. Would this cause problems for my fuel pump? Shorten its life?

3. Shouldn't there be enough fuel in the fuel line to fill the carb to get the car running after a few seconds instead of 5 to 10 seconds?

 

Once the car is running, there are no problems.

Sounds like you're loosing pressure on the fuel tank.

 

Based on my own experience a worn out fuel cap can make your car loose pressure for the fuel pump to pick gas from the tank. Check the fuel cap.

 

What about the fuel filter and fuel lines?

 Check for fuel seepage at the carb; the float chamber may be losing fuel over time. I had a float level sight glass seep do this. 

I'd replace the in line fuel filters. If you have one between your tank and your fuel pump it could be clogged up and cause a loss of pressure.

3-Car should restart right away even if the fuel pump is suddenly completely dead.

Carb should still be full of fuel.
