April 20, 201312 yr 93 legacy automatic.. been sitting dead for awhile. went to jump start it.. now the key won't come out of the ignition... i know there is a trick to this.... but I can't remember what..... amanda
April 21, 201312 yr It's in park right? If its not in park the key wont shut off all the way, so it will get stuck.
April 21, 201312 yr Author yep in park. even tried it in neutral... the key won't turn back to the off position
April 21, 201312 yr A couple other things to try are stepping on the brake, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth as your trying to turn the key off, try switching from drive to park a few times in a row, and try turning the car back on and off again and maybe it will come out. If none of that works I would suspect the sylinoid that locks the key in when not in park is malfunctioning.
April 21, 201312 yr Try hitting the key with a hammer to push it into the ignition more. Really? I would save that for a last resort, if the key isn't turning off it suggests something's binding it up or it's being locked out for some reason. Hitting it with a hammer could case the tumblers to break if they are binding.

April 24, 201312 yr Just because it works doesn't mean it's right, like I said I would leave it for a last resort.
