Good day all....

 

Wanting to learn more about a 91 Legacy wagon for sale nearby.    Car has 282,000 miles on the clock...Owner insists it runs great...fresh service done.   850 dollars to own.

 

What are the weak spots I need to look for on this car?   Engines solid or will I need to look for particulars with that amount of miles?  Has auto transmission....are those solid trannys or what?

 

Blue with some sun fading on roof, hood etc.....no major rust some spots where the paint has flaked off completely ...not a garage queen by any means but I don't need such a car...just a daily driver and lake mobile.

 

 

Any advice would be welcome....

I had a 91 Leg sedan until recently and it was still running fairly strong at 325k. Only sold it because it needed struts and brakes and several other moderate things and I needed the hauling capacity of a wagon. 

 

There really are no real weak spots. Electrical things like sensors can start to get wierd as any car pases 22 years old though. The automatic transmissions are pretty bulletproof unless it's been abused by running old or too little fluid.

I bought my 90 legacy 2.2 for $950 211k mint condition interior engine soild as a rock. My mom bought a 91 legacy 2.2 250k for $650 ran great needed struts, I would talk him down a bit, that's a lot of miles it might need a head gasket soon of it hasn't had one yet.

 

Things to look for, head gasket failure: warm it up drive it a bit, leave it running and pop the coolant resivour cap, if there is bubbles there is likely a head gasket problem.

 

Check for tourqe bind if its an awd turn in a tight circle and it should turn with little to no throttle.

 

Autos are acctually stronger than the sticks in these cars so that will be a plus, but 91 has a TSB for an inline filter before the trans cooler find out when that was done and when the timing belt was done.
