1980 Brat, clutch cable keeps breaking

Featured Replies

Clutch cable. I have broken two now. I do drive my brat everyday, but two clutch cables in less than 5 years is kinda crazy. I just replaced the clutch, pilot, plate, had the flywheel ground (two step). I get it all back together and then snap! another clutch cable gone. this time it broke at the top near where it attaches to the pedal.

Any Ideas?

Maybe poor quality cable?  I know aircraft cable suffers when it loses its lubricant- you might soak the cable in a light penetrating oil and make sure it has grease where it attaches to the pedal pin.  Also watch it through full movement in case it is abrading anywhere through its travel. Any sharp corners?

Ok, I think when the pedal is up (Cluch engaged) the cable is getting bent a bit to much. I will re-adjust and try the new cable when it comes.

and yes... AUTOZONE!

Oh and I will lube it good this time.

Get your face down there and push clutch with your right hand. Watch the metal flex by the pivot pin, just below it. That and routing. I know I need to work both out before I'm happy with mine.

My pedal box was welded already. Check yours for a stress crack. Once it happens it just gets worse.
