Have done this to keep the rubber from baking and failing early on the inner CV.

Neat. My new cat/Y-pipe came with a heat shield, but I'm thinking of either wrapping it with some heat tape, or securing a section of mil-grade heat shielding from a Detroit Diesel motor's exhaust in a way similar to what you did.
