'87 Brat engine question

Featured Replies

Hey, I was wondering how hard is it to put a Subaru Impreza WRX motor into my Brat? I have already read the different forums on people doing the swap already. I just wanted to know what problems do you run into? Is it worth the engine swap?

It's been done, but the most successful ones convert to AWD. Bolting a WRX engine to the BRAT drivetrain is overkill. I know some guys put the turbo engine in a wagon and snapped 3 axles in about 10 miles. Do a search on EJ22 swap for the brat. Seems to be the best way to get a good horsepower gain, get fuel injection instead of carb and still use the brat/EA series drivetrain.

Thanks for the help. So I should go to the junk yard and look for early 90s to mid 90s EJ22T or EJ22G for the Brat with manual 5 spd tranny

The early ones are what I'd be hunting for. They were non-interference.

Also, do some reading on the swaps to be sure you're ready to tackle it. It's well documented on this site, but is still an involved swap. Lots of people will help talk you through it as you go.

you say you have read different forums about the swap, yet you do not know the hardships ahead of you. read. read. read. otherwise you will screw something up or buy the wrong stuff etc. end result: a pile of useless crap you cant sell anyone because they know better.
