I have a 2003 Legacy with 155,000 miles. I am loosing coolant but cannot see where. I can smell coolant, but only when I have been using heater.  

You can have the system pressure checked. or bypass the heater and see if the leak stops.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have an appointment for tomorrow to have it pressure tested.
