Need head swap input/advice. 2,5 DOHC to 2.5 SOHC.

Featured Replies

I have a 98 Outback with a 2.5 DOHC. There is a 2000 Legacy at my work with a 2.5 SOBC dual port. I'm interested in installing the single cam heads on my 2.5 DOHC block. I tried to search but didn't find any helpful info.

Won't be able to make that swap work. Not easily at least. That SOHC engine has too many differences in electronics. You would need heads intake manifold, and the whole wiring harness and ECU to go with it.

Much easier to find a 95 dual port 2.2 and put those heads on the 2.5 block. Still need the manifold to go with the heads, but the electronics are identical to your 98, so you just plug the manifold harness into your existing ECU and go.

This swap will raise your compression and require you to run premium fuel though.

So your saying my DOHC intake won't fit the SOHC heads and that's the need for the harness change.?

Are the exhaust manifolds the same for a dual port head?

Yes all EJ dual port exhaust will interchange.

On to plan B. There's a 97? Outback sport at my work with the 2.2 and manual trans in it. It would be nice to install that.
