Cannot fill up tank easily

Featured Replies

New to the forum. OBW 2.5L manual tranny. I gave up on the fill up problem long ago. I used to have the engine misfire codes of P301 - 4, but that quit around two years ago. I don't know why. When I bought the car it had been sitting outside but covered for a year. At the time I first filled it up, it filled up easily but sequentially got worse to the current situation it only vents up the fill up line and the thin tube next to it--no air seems to vent in any other capacity. I had removed the fill up tube and had been inside the gas tank. There were no obstructions. At the time, the charcoal canister seemed to be fine. The only problem that I could tell was how slow it was to fill up the gas tank. I chose to live with it, because gas fumes now make me very ill. Last night more than two years later, the p1443 code came on. It's an easy fix to replace the solenoid, but I doubt this will solve the original problem. The other forums don't address this fill up issue when referring to the p1443 code. I wish I had known of this forum when I was working on it then.

The vent control solenoid is responsible for allowing the vapors to escape the tank while filling.

The vapor is pushed through the charcoal canister and mostly clean air comes out of a filter attached to the canister. Since you have a code for the vent solenoid Id suggest removing it and seeing if its clogged. Do the same with the filter for the canister. It's a round can and about the size of a tennis ball. There should be a hose from the filter that sticks into a hole in the frame. Pull the hose out and see if a spider or moth has built a web home in the end of the hose.

had one that the two hoses on the rollover vent on filler tude were reversed made for very slow fill swaped them back and problem gone

I'll be kicking myself if it has been that easy! Thanks for the suggestions.
