climate control issues 85 gl factory installed ac

Featured Replies

hello all,

I am having issues with my climate control system.  My blower motor works fine, but only the vents located chest level emit air. I this a vaccum problem? I am a little stumped.

any advice is always appreciated,

If the vents only blow from one section regardless of which position you have selected it usually is a vacuum problem. Start by checking the vac line in the engine compartment; runs from a tee'd fitting near the throttle body, back to a vac canister near the passenger strut tower, and then in through the firewall.

If that's good, the next check is where the vac line clips to the heater blower body behind the glovebox, making a connection from rubber hose to plastic line. From there the plastic line snakes up into the central console.

I am in the middle of cleaning out/repairing the HVAC stack in my '89 DL wagon. I had a mouse infestation (car sat in a tree row for about ten years) sho I had to go clear in to get all their nests out.

I tested the little vacuum controllers by putting vacuum to, chewing their operation and seeing if they would hold vacuum. They seem tho work so I'm goin to run them. I couldn't source new ones anywhere, so maybe they're pretty durable.

Not sure how to test the electro/vacuum dash control. At least it's relatively easy to get out once I repair the rest of the system. I'm suspecting that will be hard to come by as well.

Another member here, suggested I check the plastic vacuum line that is on the upper part of the fire wall in the engine compartment and runs from the drivers side to the passengers side. I did find an abrasion to the line there. Can't tell if it's an actual hole, but it is a good spot to suspect.

While I had the HVAC stack out, I replaced the foam on the air control doors. I suspect this foam insulates the doors for noise control, as well as assuring discreet airflow.

Wow I kind of hijacked this thread! lol

Long story short, as Smashed Glass stated, a vacuum leak is a very likely culprit. As far as I can see about the only other things I could see would be a bad vacuum control motor (course I'm not sure if your HVAC system is the same as mine), or the electro/vacuum dash switch.

Good luck!

John
