1997 impreza noise

Featured Replies

Hello everyone!

I just some questions regarding my friends 1997 impreza. It has 200000 miles on the car but the engine has only 100000 miles. The car makes a loud whining coming from the front of the car while driving it also makes a chugging noise. The car almost sounds like a train. I was wondering if this could the front differential. I ask cause the warranty ends in two weeks and I wanted to make sure the problem was identified before then. Thanks

There is a dipstick with a yellow top on it on the left side of the tranny/front diff..that is the dip stick for the front diff...it is some what of a pain in the a** to find

ATF dipstick is on the left.

Differential dipstick is on the right side.

Manual trans gear oil is on the right side. Not hard to find. Look straight down on the side of the trans right behind the bell-housing.

If you have the big air box on the throttle body it's below that.

the 'chugging' sound is probably a bad exhaust header gasket

My mistake...saying left side like if looking at it from the front of the car....or the doughnut seal behind the second cat

I'll take a look when I see my friend next. It's been making the noise for a couple months so the damage might have been done and unfortunately the dealership claims there is nothing wrong.

Well I finally got around to checking the front differential and it's clean it actually looks like someone changed it recently. It was taken to another shop who said they believed it was the front differential.
