Speedo Quit

Featured Replies

I have a 1996 Legacy Outback wagon 2.2L with a mere 276K on it. Today, after a run to the grocery store the speedometer quit working. I have reset the codes, checked the connections and took it for a spin. It ran fine, but the check engine light came on again. Which may be a good thing if it is the VSS1 located on the transaxle. A couple of questions: First, how do I remove the speed sensor from the trans? Looks like a 17mm open end could do it. I do have a spare. And second, how difficult is it to get to the VSS2 located behind the instrument cluster?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

The VSS1 is pretty easy to pull, the wrench has to be thin enough to go on. Limited rotation but it's not in there too tight.

I've never had to change VSS2.
