May 3, 200421 yr Well Pep Boys finally found the holes in the front frame rails of the Brat (took 'em 3 years) so I failed my inspection there. Fabricated a real ugly cap for the drivers side today but it looks like it should work. Question is does anybody know what gauge steel was used for the underside of a Brat? I'm guessing like 22 or 20. My cap is 22 as I don't have a steel bender and didn't know if I'd be able to get a decent crease with thicker steel. Just wanna come up with a setting to work with. Oh yeah. Also, the underside coating. Should it be removed or will a wire feed welder using flux go through it w/o a problem or a fire.
May 3, 200421 yr welding a subaru without a fire? that never came to mind.... i would just bur right through it, and hold your breath. make it look good, with spray on undercoating, to make the law happy. use as small as you want, as its only cosmetic, as far as imconcerend. 22 should be great.
May 3, 200421 yr Author Yeah I was planning on going right through the undercoating but wanted to ask since I wanna know what guage was used originally. It'll be the first welding I've done since I passed my test in NC oh 10 or so years ago so it should be fun.
May 3, 200421 yr that undercoat will smoke a bit and catch on fire. the carpet is the real thing to worry about.
