EJ transmission swap in er27?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone - I'm new to the site, but not new to subies. Currently have a wrx swapped Impreza  and recently came across a 89 XT6 for sale locally:  180k - fresh motor rebuild, no rust, new struts - only issue is that tranny is grinding in 4th.   Anyone know if an ej series transmission will work with the er27 motor without too much modification?   Would love to add the xt6 to my collection - but I need to figure the trans issue out before I do - thanks!!!  Sorry I searched and didn't find anything - so if I missed something - flame on haha...

Not easily.  It doesn't bolt up and would require some work to deal with the bellhousing issue.

I'd just get an XT6 or EA82 turbo transmission and keep it simple.  Lots of those will work - FT4WD, PT4WD, dual range, etc.  Non turbo transmissions will work too, the front axle spline count will differ though, but if you get the proper spline count up front (which is easily done)  you can even use non-turbo EA82 engines which are a dime a dozen.  I've got one you could have for $50 if you were closer.

post here first - someone probably has one, like me but closer.

good luck and enjoy!  those XT6 engines run forever if you don't run them low on oil or overheat them, very reliable and robust engines.

Although the trans can be made to fit, it will not work against an ea or er engine without extensive bellhousing modifications, where you would have to lose about 10mm between one or the other, and make some flywheel/clutch combinations.

However, this would be a good idea when using an ej motor.

The trans can fit using xt6/wrx mounts, and the driveshaft will have to be shortened on the front half. The xt6 has a 3.9 rear diff, so anything with a 3.9 final drive will work with that.

Guts from an EJ AWD into the XT6 trans front case halves.

Bolt it up.

Done.
