Front Strut Replacement Loyale "Retaining Tab" on New Strut

Featured Replies

I'm replacing the front stuts on my 1991 Loyale 2wd non turbo automatic. The new struts are Gabriel and they have a tab that compresses the strut rod. Do I bent the tab forward to release the shaft or what do I do with this tab?GetAttachment_zps9dd84889.jpg My old struts don't have this tab but the rest of the strut is the same.

it comes compressed from the factory.  You will have to remove the tab, then the shock will extend to it's operating length.   You have the coils ready to go?  Make sure your top strut mounts pivot freely.  There's a bearing in there that may be shot.

The tabs are welded on, how do you remove the tabs? Bend them or what? I have new strut mounts with bearings so that is covered.

I feel like a doofus, the tabs aren't welded on, you just compress the rod and the tabs slip off.  Thanks for the help!

Also, be advised that there is an 'OUT' side to the front struts when assembling the spring coil and top hat.   The original struts are marked with an 'OUT'.   If the Gabriels did not come with top hats, you will re-use the old top hats.   The top hat is off-center about an inch where the shock end goes thru ... therefore, the need to put the 'OUT' mark towards the wheel.

Where the heck is Chuluota?
