82 Brat, ECU pointless after weber swap and emissions gut?

Featured Replies

I haven't messed with EA81s in forever and I will be keeping this 82 BRAT an EA81 powered truck instead of swapping in something else. I am collecting parts to do a build with EA71 piston with .030 off the heads and a few other tricks. In the mean time since my Weber arrived I went ahead and installed it for better driveability. Having stripped off pretty much all the emissions at this point the only thing that the ECU should still be doing is the carb choke based on water temp right? And it would be easy enough to build a small circuit to manage that. Are there any other ECU functions other than emissions for an 82 that anyone knows of? I have the shop manual but it isn't with me and I am curious now!

Choke should just be a 12v heater cicuit.  Comes from the FPCU (fuel relay) whenever Tach signal is present....just like fuel pump...

Not managed by ECU at all.  Only thing the ECU controlled is Air bleeds to vary the mixture.

Rip it out and throw it away at this point.

So the exact circuit I was thinking I might need to build is already in place, nice! ECU will be gently removed and placed in a box with everything else in case I ever want to revert for historical purposes.
