engine compatabilities?

Featured Replies

I have a 2000 and 2002 outback wagons with running motors in them.

I saw a 2006 impreza rs for sale needing an engine

Would these fit?

thanks guys

No. The 2000 and 2002 are compatible with each other but in 2006, they changed the piston dish style and went to a variable valve timing setup on the heads.

how about this....would the 2000 and 2002 engines I have fit into say the 96-99 legacys and oubacks?

That's the other dividing line. 1999 was the crossover year so it would fit some 1999s but nothing earlier. The short blocks are compatible back to 1990 but the heads, intake manifold and sensors all changed in 99.

Yours would be a match to the 1999 1/2, - 2004s legacy, outback and Impreza. I believe (Someone coorect me/double check) that foresters started this phase 2 in 1998.

Why is everyone forgetting he has the entire car (per his post).

The 2000/2002 Engines may fit both older and newer Legacy/Legacy Outbacks if your willing to do the work.

You will probably have to swap the dash, dash harness, engine harness, and motors out of the outbacks.  You may also have to swap the body wiring harness as well.

This comes down to time, motivation, money, and what the status is on the cars you have.

I'm saying it this way because if you have a wrecked 2000 Outback w/ a Good motor (that's complete) then finding one w/ a blown motor of any year that the dash will fit is a plausible swap (regardless of engine changes).

The main thing is the ECU needs to stay the same and the sensors.  Whether you could do this with a 2006, I don't know, but that dash and harness isn't going to fit into an '06 RS.
