First Subaru - travelling with kids

I need some extra storage on my 2011 Outback in order to conserve space in the cabin.

Ideally a rooftop cargo basket seems ideal.  But too many i'm finding require extra rackmount systems, some of which seem way overpriced (yakima, thule).

My Outback already has the crossrails that swivel from siderails to crossbars.  What cargo basket is best for installing right on these factory bars?

Thanks!

Are you putting the kids on the roof? :) How and what are you loading in the car?

There are some decent options there that are really affordable (in some cases they look a little cheap, but it is definitely somewhere to start). I've heard good things about the Rola baskets.

Money aside, I love my Yakima Load Warrior. It is rock solid, looks good and it just the right size, not to mention that it did not require anything extra. It just came with universal crossbar mounts. But those baskets are super overpriced. I got mine on CL barely used for $80, so I couldn't beat it.

Keep eyes open on craigslist for some good used ones. Those old Sears X-Cargo cartop carriers were well made and keep your stuff dry. they look a little dated but I've seen them as cheap as $20.

I think most of them bolted to the stock roof rack.
