September 15, 201411 yr I have a 98 Legacy Outback Wagon, the output transaxel is leaking from the right stub axel, the retainer housing has a clamp held in place with a single bolt. Does the retainer turn out to remove the seal and hold the stub shaft in place? Are their any settings related to moving or removing this retainer? My manuel has no infomation about changing this seal, any infomation about this repair will be helpfull.
September 15, 201411 yr Retainer ring sets the bearing preload for the front diff, and it's position. Mark it and reinstall to the same location and you will be fine. Spin it out, change seal, spin it back in/
September 15, 201411 yr yes - mark it to install in the same orientation. And - also count the number of turns to reinstall. be "pulling" outward when removing so you know it breaks free (corrosion/age/heat cycling/etc) when it's done and you're not counting turns without backing it out. it's very roughly 6 or 7 turns I think to give you an order of magnitude to look for. i made it i think 16,000 miles before destroying my front diff by not counting properly. "wait....was it 5 or 6 turns..."? also - the seals are directional so make sure you get the correct side.
