2001 2.5 interchangeability/ compatability

Recommended Posts

The answer I think is yes. The forester for sure. The Impreza may have still had the dual overhead cam motor but I think by then they had switched to single overhead. If you are unsure of the difference, do a quick google image search and you'll see the difference between the two.

If it's a single overhead cam 2.5 motor you are good to go. Again, I think you should have a match. I think by 2000+ all models had this newer motor.

Up for auction is a 2000 2001 2002 Subaru Forester / Impreza 2.5L SOHC 4 cylinder long block engine. The engine was a good running engine removed from a wrecked 2002 Forester that has been reconditioned with the following parts: New timing belt, new timing tensioner, new idlers, new water pump, new revised FelPro MLS head gaskets, new rear main seal, new valve stem seals, and new valve cover gaskets. The cylinder heads have been hot tanked, pressure tested, resurfaced, and have had all the valves adjusted. It has 0 miles on it since being reconditioned. It comes with everything as seen in the pictures. Buyer will need to swap your manifolds, sensors, hoses, and accessories over. Engine is already in time, and after swapping your parts over, will be ready to be installed. Why chance buying a used engine with nothing done to it when for a little more, all the expensive maintenance is good for many years to come.

I will ship anywhere in the continental USA through a freight company to a freight dock or a business with loading dock. Delivery to your door is extra. Email me with your zip code for a quote. Free local pick-up. NO CORE IS REQUIRED. In most cases, engine will be shipped out next business day of cleared payment. Please DO NOT place a bid on this engine if you are not able to follow through and purchase it.....We also provide installation for local buyers for $500 extra.

Hello.
I have a 2001 legacy standard wagon subaru.  Will an engine from a 1995
automatic transmission fit the 2001?  Will the Bell housing fit?
Will The Torque Convertor Swap to the fly whell?   Will Motor mounts
fit?  Does it bolt up and what are the differences in the two engines?

I am doing the research for a mechanic able to put a new engine
in my tired car.  I have done lots of fixes and paid it off. and then
bingo.. oil in the cooling system.  There appears to have been a head
gasket replacement once.  and of course it was used when I got it.

Advice would be very welcome.

thank you for taking the time to answer any or all of my
questions.

If the car did not overheat, doing a head gasket job isn't a bad idea. Do some research on here and see which brand of gaskets is recommended. There are numerous writeups and a few videos out there detailing the job. It can be done without pulling the motor.

If you are sure you're wanting to swap though, any 2000-2004 EJ25 motor will swap in as mentioned. try car-part.com row52.com and craigslist as best options to source a used motor.

Thank you so much for your in put..I found some info that had stated that it might be that only 00-04 would be compatible. the car does burn oil.. that is a concern.  .. I was also reading about head gasket stop leak.  it does not sound good. the mechanic is willing to put in a 60k engine for swap of my lovely 1970 honda 90 trail bike.  I am woman who is willing to watch and learn.. but know zero or may not have been into this car for so much $, that I now feel the need to save my investment with a new motor.

My mechanic, that is willing  to make the swap, had questions and so will ask them here:

1. Will 1995  Automatic transmission fit?

I understand from  Johnceeggleston that it will not swap.. thank you so much for replying. John

2. Does the 1995 Bell Housing fit?

3. Does the Torque Converter swap to flywheel?

3. Would the motor mounts match.. could they be retrofitted?

4 What is the dif in the two engines and does it bolt up?

I am beginning to understand what this means in images of engines.  My shadetree mechanic.. knows old model cars and motors and engines and welds and would like to find out if the 1995 could be retrofitted to my car.  YES i understand how it would be the best and easiest and really work to use 00-04.. but for the sake of following through with my part of how to find an engine that will work in my car and to have done research,  I will ask the questions.   I understand how busy you all are.. life is like that.. and once again.. Thank you so much for any questions you can answer and most definitely for answering in the first place.  Have a wonderful day.  Jessie.

look for an engine at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

sort by zip code to see what is close.

you will have to search each year, trans and model separately.

you can use an ej25 SOHC engine from any of the following models: legacy, impreza, forester, GT, and outback will all work, manual or auto trans.

(not the WRX but they would be really pricey.)

00 - 01 ej25, a direct swap. this is your best choice. use one of these for less confusion. direct swap.

02 - 04 will work, but you will have to swap the driver side cam sprocket, crank sprocket, and maybe the intake manifold.

these will work and may be worth looking into if you can find a bargain price on an engine.

but if price and availability are the same as an 00 - 01 engine, stick to the 00 - 01 cars.

if you use one of the engines listed above,

all of the other questions asked above become moot, a non issue.

the 95 will not work.

Jonceggleston.  Hello again.. I am very confident that you know what you are talking about.  The mechanic is very curious .. so now to keep good graces with him.

I will ask and if you can give me an answer that would

be good and I understand beyond the call of duty.

What does not fit on the 95 subaru engine with the 2001  subaru engine?

My mechanic is very curious and short of letting him tear into my car to find out why.the 95 engine does not fit. Really??? not going to happen..... can you tell me in simple terms the following?

I bet you think this is a joke .. really it isn't.. I am a woman just trying to keep the peace...

2. Does the 1995 Bell Housing fit or not and why?

3. Does the Torque Converter swap to flywheel why or why not?

3. Would the motor mounts match.. could they be retrofitted?

4 What is the dif in the two engines and does it bolt up?

I do like my mechanic and this might make him a happier mechanic.. they can be an eccentric breed.

Thank you again.  Jessie.

I have gone to another mechanic and discussed this car problem of head gaskets that I am having.  The mechanic that found the problem.  He has highly recommended not to have it fixed but pass the car onto someone who has the "know how " to fix it.  My shade tree mechanic may be in over his head.  Being a woman who's raw nerves are being tested I am throwing in the towel.  Thank you Johneggleston for answering previous questions.  Jessie
