October 28, 201411 yr I had a look at http://www.ultimates...guide-4wd-rear/ , have done nearly the same, but I can't locate the wheel bearings I want, which are the ones pictured in the above post, they are NTN 4T-CR-0685, a 3-piece set. The various suppliers all list the one-piece cartridge replacement, "Lubed and sealed for life", which is what I'm trying to get away from, I want to pack 'em in my own grease.. Anybody know of a bearing supplier that has these?
October 28, 201411 yr You don't want the 3 piece. The outer races are skinny and are prone to spinning in the housing. That's why they went to the one piece (which is still 2 taper/roller sets and a single large outer race) The cartridge type is not sealed......stick the whole thing in a bearing packer and squeeze away......they will fill up with whatever grease you want to use. The grease they come with is shipping grease.
October 29, 201411 yr Author Just back from looking at the National Seal bearing set as described above. Looks good but for plastic spacers on the cones. I intend to use a MIL spec polyglycol bearing grease, am worried about that plastic with the synthetic grease. The bearing I took out have no plastic bits...
October 29, 201411 yr The ones I installed in the rear of my Brat had the plastic cage also. Pretty sure they made that cage compatible with every common available grease. I want to say I used synthetic grease on mine. Seems it was red and Mobil I believe.
October 29, 201411 yr Go with NTN...... Not national or timken. You want the OE type Japanese bearing. I've had trouble with timken esepscially not being correct sizes.
