I have a 1988 XT DL 2wd. that when i put in gear the passenger CV axle just spins and makes a grinding noise. thought it was a bad CV axle changed and it still does it. Any one have any ideas?

Sounds like your hub is stripped out. Most likely the axle nut came loose on the last one and let the axle get loos and strip the hub. Pull the axle and look at the hub splines.
