December 17, 201411 yr 300,000k on my forester, mechanic says it needs transaxle bearing. Do I need to drop engine to replace it? Is it worth doing or scap my super-ru
December 17, 201411 yr First, I'd ask what bearing he is talking about? Auto or Manual Trans? What symptoms are you experiencing?
December 17, 201411 yr Author My forester is an automatic, Apparently there is a shaft that links motor to the transmission and he feels the bearing is at that point exiting the motor. With 300k I just don't know if it is worth it???? Engine sounds good and trany does too?? How difficult is it to remove the engine and replace the part?
December 17, 201411 yr Find a new Subaru Mechanic. The engine flex plate is bolted to the crank. The Torque Converter is bolted to the flex plate and splined to the transmission. All bearings are deep in the transmission or the front diff.
December 17, 201411 yr Author The noise I heard came only when I was accelerating and had a ringing noise to it. I thought at first it was a heat shield or something of that nature rattling in the front of the engine.
December 17, 201411 yr Heat shield sounds more likely to me. Possible the flex plate has cracked but you'll usually get a knocking/clicking type sound from that.
