Front strut brace issue

Featured Replies

Hey, so I got a front strut brace from E-Bay, and......it doesn't quite fit! The hood doesnt close all the way. Go figure! Anyways I got it to fit by removing the "shield"? under the hood scoop. Is there any reason this is not a good idea? It looks like the torque box and the strut brace sit low enough that they wont be damaged if anything passed through the scoop while driving. But maybe there is something I didnt consider.

What car do you have, yr/model?

If you have a cosmetic scoop, and are referring to that sort of shielding, you are simply inviting the elements into your engine bay... i.e. corrosion.

You could take advantage of that situation, if you have an RS/OBS.

Its a 97 OBS. How can I take advantage? Do tell.

Sorry compadre, I'm simply showing you a door.

I saw a 97 OBS in Chi that had the plate removed, and the intake modified so that it had an open air filter sitting beneath the scoop. I noticed my 98 had a different setup than in that yours should already have the box right beneath the scoop opening.

Now.. what with the zip ties, and the general ricey state of that OBS.. fart can and plastidip.. who knows if some serious thought went into that.

Cheers on finding out! haha

I think that having that "shield" removed may reduce some drag on the car. Air going into the scoop while driving will pass over the top of the torque box instead of just getting stuck or forced through the little foam passages.

Ehh.. don't bank on any speed or HP gain LOL. It's not like the scoop itself doesn't create drag.

Just saying, if you're going to weather your engine bay, maybe you can get a few HP with an intake mod.

I'm personally fine with keeping it all closed, but I do appreciate now knowing I'd have to sacrifice that for a strut bar (been thinking about getting one).

I already have an intake mod ;) Ill drive it for a bit and see how it goes. I got a cheapish brace on E-Bay. Perhaps a better brand like a Megan, or Cusco would fit better.
