Transmission Removal - 99 Legacy

Featured Replies

There is trans oil on the small engine plate below the motorand on the front of the trans. The rack has oil on it too, so it could be the rack leaking.  I'm going to place something just below bell housing opening to see if is coming out there.  It seems leak when I drive but not at idle.

So if I need to replace the front seal, do I just remove the flex plate bolts and motor/trans housing bolts and slide the trans back and down?

I'm assuming no messing around with the engine?  Any place else that it could be leaking trans fluid from?

Thanks

It's probably the coolant lines that run up the left hand side of the engine to the radiator.

What ever it is it is leaking on the y-pipe just below the tranny.  The tranny fluid is low. I did an engine swap and there was no sign of leakage in the bell housing.  I have some detective work ahead to see if I can pinpoint the source.

Based on the various locations you mentioned I would still say the transmission cooler lines are a probable culprit.

Another thing is that year should have a spin on external filter. It may be loose and due for replacement.

the oil separator plate on the rear of the block is a much more likely source.

use a white paper towel to wipe off some of the oil,

or better yet let it drip onto the paper towel.

if it does not have a pinkish tint,

it probably is not trans fluid.

it is probably engine oil.

The engine has had a new metal separator plate installed, so hopefully it is not leaking.  I think(hope) it is trans fluid.

Is the trans fluid level low?

Is the steering fluid low?

When you removed the engine did you leave the torque converter in the trans?
