August 10, 201510 yr My daughter has 99 forester with a manual transmission that is having some internal bearing noises. I need to find a replacement transmission and I need to know what will go in the car without much trouble. I know that I can grab an outback trans if I grab the rear diff as well, but are there any other trannys that I can just pull from a donor and put in that car? Thanks
August 10, 201510 yr An outback also has a 4.11 rear diff ratio, so it would directly work in your forester. The outback has a shorter 5th gear, though. So you'll be running higher RPMs on the highway, I wouldn't advise this. Putting a forester trans in my outback was the best thing ever. The legacy GT and RS also have a 4.11 manual transmission that will directly swap into your forester. Being a 99 you have an 8 bolt bellhousing, so I'd advise a transmission from a 99+ impreza/forester or a 2000+ legacy/outback. A 4 bolt transmission will work, it just requires more messing around.
